And, that’s a wrap

10 Dec

It was quite a year…
Our primary goal is to share wonder with the community. Thanks to the generosity of our volunteers, partners, sponsors and donors, we completed more sessions of My Magic Hands and performances of Senior Sorcery than ever before.  The results are truly gratifying and we look forward to continuing these programs in 2011.  It is never too late — or too early –to help contribute to the success of these programs.  Please keep us in mind.

Magic in Print
We would also like to thank our dedicated readers and subscribers who added A Grand Expose, The Complete Ibidem and the issues of Magicol to their libraries. You will be pleased to know that we have several exciting releases planned for next year.

Magic Online
We also expanded our reach through the Internet with Sid Lorraine’s Magical ChatterBox, launched a new exhibition on The Life and Magic of Ross Bertram and spruced up our exhibitions on Bert Douglas and the Magic Postcards of Msgr Foy. We are pleased to be able to provide free and open access to these online resources to magic enthusiasts all over the world.  So, if you have some time over the holidays and haven’t done so already, please visit them.

Magic on Stage
Thank you to the thousands of people who attended  the Masters of Magic series at Luminato.  All will agree that Mac King, Max Maven, Bob Sheets and Juan Tamariz set a new benchmark for magic.  You can look forward to more magic at Luminato from Magicana in 2011.

Magic in the Family
Finally, to those who came out to the 41st Annual Magic Collectors Weekend in Chicago and the eighth and final 31 Faces North, thank you for your wonderful company and fantastic memories. We hope to see you again soon!

Best wishes for a safe and magical holiday season.

Lights… Camera… Abracadabra

8 Oct

To our Canadian subscribers: Happy Thanksgiving. We are thankful for your continued support and look forward to sharing some exciting new projects with you in the near future.

This weekend, we’re off to the movies… well, not quite.

We are pleased to present a series of magic My Magic Hands workshops in partnership with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) at the brand new Bell Lightbox in Toronto.

On Oct 9, 10 and 11, Magicana will be conducting two-hour workshops designed to share with young magicians how making magic relates to making movies.

School’s in Session

17 Sep

As the summer comes to close, we are preparing to begin the fall sessions of our children’s community outreach program, My Magic Hands. In a few short weeks, we will be starting new programs with some of our local community partners. We are pleased to welcome our newest partner:  Boundless Adventures.

Boundless, founded in 1984, is dedicated to improving the lives of marginalized youth, adults and children at risk through a unique combination of counselling, social rehabilitation, alternative education and outdoor adventure. They work in partnership with Ontario-based community agencies, mostly from Toronto, with programs that strive to prevent crime, promote alternatives to drug abuse and strengthen the bonds of families and communities ravaged by poverty, violence and mental illness.

This fall, we will be revisiting perennial community partners: Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and Lawrence Heights Middle School. With the help of these partners – and an outstanding group of young volunteers – we will continue to share wonder with many new magicians.

A Grand Exposé

30 Aug

As you may have read earlier this year on our Artistic Director’s blog, Magicana unveiled our plans to reprint, A Grand Exposé, a rare 1860 treatise on deception.

The book is now at the  printers and will be available from Magicana on September 15, 2010. We had originally planned to make this book available September 1. However, due to a delay with the printers our anticipated shipping date has been adjusted to September 15, so we are extending our advance purchase offer to September 10.

This book has a limited print run of 500 copies with only 400 available for sale. It will sell for $45 USD plus shipping within North America. Canadian orders are subject to HST.

THE BOOK

A Grand Exposé is an unapologetic explanation of numerous methods of cheating and how they are put into practice as well as several “short cons”. The author – identified only as “an adept” – paints a vivid picture of live in the latter half of the 19th Century as he travels the road, rail and waterways of the period plying his trade.

It was originally published in 1860 and only a handful of copies are known to exist. Our reprint has been reset and designed by Michael Albright who took every effort to create a convincing echo of the original. The foil-stamped, embossed hardbound edition measures 4.75″ by 5.5″ has a limited print run of 500 copies with only 400 available for sale.

Don’t miss your chance to own something grand.

Diabolically Divine

30 Jul

On August 18, Magicana welcomes France’s Gaëtan Bloom to share his delightfully diabolical and devious creations.

Gaëtan Bloom

To the public, Gaëtan Bloom is a furiously funny master magician. In Europe is is recognized as a top performer close-up and on stage. He is a feature performer at the Crazy Horse Saloon in Paris where he has appeared over 4,000 times. He is also a sought-after television personality and a designer of special effects for film and theater.

To magicians, he is a fountainhead of creativity and cleverness, constantly pushing the boundaries of what you thought was possible. Recently, MAGIC Magazine called his  Bloomeries instructional DVDs “must have videos.”

We are pleased to invite Gaëtan to Toronto to delight and deceive us on
